The IOA approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games following a June visit by an Indian delegation to London for talks with Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials. India last hosted the event in 2010 in New Delhi.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) during its Special General Meeting (SGM) in New Delhi on Wednesday. India last staged the Games in 2010 in New Delhi, where the host nation finished second on the medals table with 101 medals, behind Australia’s 177.

The move comes after an Indian delegation visited London in June to meet Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials, laying the groundwork for the bid. Hosting the 2030 CWG is part of India’s larger sporting vision, which also includes bidding for the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad.

According to a PTI report, India has already submitted its Expression of Interest (EOI) to host the Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the venue city. The final bid must be submitted by August 31. With Canada withdrawing from the race, India’s chances of securing hosting rights have significantly improved.

The delegation to London included IOA president PT Usha, representatives from the Union Sports Ministry, and officials from the Gujarat state government. They met Commonwealth Sport authorities to better understand the hosting process and requirements.

Recently, a team from Commonwealth Sport led by Director of Games Darren Hall toured Ahmedabad to inspect venues and meet Gujarat government officials. A larger delegation is scheduled to visit later this month.

The final decision on the host nation will be made by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in the last week of November in Glasgow. If successful, this would mark India’s second time hosting the CWG after the 2010 edition in Delhi.
